What is the Gospel?

There is only one Gospel and that is the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. The designation of the concise stories about the life and ministry, written by the four evangelists namely Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as “Four Gospels” is a misnomer. It was not the right application of truth to make the recollections of the four writers as the Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The written historical facts of the Evangelists should not be labelled as Gospels.

The Gospel or the Good News was originated from Jesus Christ Himself. Mark started his book by saying that it was the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. (Mark 1:1) Then Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God.(Mark 1:14) The Lord who was sent from God proclaimed the gospel of the kingdom. The gospel was not earthly in origin but was in the mind of God in heaven.

Now after that John was put in prison,

 Jesus came into Galilee,

preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

And saying, The time is fulfilled,

and the kingdom of God is at hand:

repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Mark 1:14-15

The Good News that was preached by Jesus Christ as recorded by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were featured in the New Testament of the Bible. With that in mind, it is wrong to attribute to all words written in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation as the “Gospel”. The epistles of the apostles are another “Gospel” if they deviate from the original gospel of Jesus Christ. Always compare their teachings to the gospel of Christ. They should only spread the gospel they learned from their Master and Lord.

Galatians 1:6-9

6  I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

7  Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

8  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

9  As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

The followers of Jesus Christ were instructed to spread the gospel. Live by the gospel as a witness of its power. The gospel must come alive through the lives of the believers. The gospel can only be understood as we live by it. We should study and dig deeper to know the gospel. What Jesus says, every word He says is a good news. Be thirsty to the living water. Eat the bread of life.

Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Mark 16:15

Bigger than the Bible.

John 6:63-65

It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing:

the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

But there are some of you that believe not.

For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not,

and who should betray him.

  And he said,

Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me,

except it were given unto him of my Father.

The Bible is a great religious book. It survives the onslaught of time and higher criticism. Christians all over the world owe a great deal of their existence on this Book. The Bible continues to be a controversial manuscript in spite of its outstanding contribution in the development of the western civilization. There are legitimate criticisms regarding the scribal transmission of the biblical text. How the ancient scribes copied the original manuscript by hand until the advent of a printing press. The scribes were ordinary human beings with their own limitations, subject to the frailties of life. Some Bible scholars are saying that the early scribes were illiterate or uneducated to handle the scribal task.

The Words of Christ are from God. God sent Jesus to communicate the words to His disciples and the world.  Is it possible that the words of Christ had been tampered by the ancient scribes through the process of manual transmission? It is possible but I doubt it.

People can fabricate or omit letters but not the spirit and truth behind every word that came out from God. The Truth is the highest authority to reckon with. Jesus is the Truth and always speaks of the truth. He is the light and there is no darkness in Him. He is the Life. The word of Jesus Christ does not need any divine inspiration because the Son knows the Father and His will. Whereas, the Bible needs the so-called “divine inspiration” to make it authoritative.

I used to believe that the cornerstone or foundation on my faith in on the Bible. Since the original manuscripts of the Books of the Bible were lost, I felt unstable if I just anchored my faith on the crude copies of the books of the Bible. My faith in Christ is bigger than the Bible itself. Our survival depends on Christ alone. We have a mystical relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. A relationship that can never be explained by human words.

How would we know the words of Christ are true? Obey and practice what He says. Love God and our neighbors to start with. Believe in God believe also in Him. You can test and find out later if His commandments work and is true. Let us converse with Him in prayer for He is real.
